PREFACE

New turfgrass varieties are constantly being released from public and private sources. In addition, turfgrass breeders are continually interested in having experimentals tested under a variety of growing conditions. In order to determine relative adaptability and performance, it is necessary that these turfgrasses be tested under different environmental conditions. Likewise, turfgrass research scientists and extension agents are interested in the relative performance of new turfgrasses and thus routinely establish evaluation tests. In evaluation tests, it is important to have seed of varieties or test entries from certified sources or from sources which the evaluator would be able to verify origin. This gives assurance as to the purity of the entries tested and results reported would likely be reproducible. With this understanding, the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) felt that there was a need to accurately summarize the proper name and experimental number of all turfgrass varieties. These have been listed along with the company or institution willing to supply them for turf evaluation trials and whether they are commercially available. Names, addresses and phone numbers are also listed. It is the intention of the NTEP to update this listing every two years.

PLEASE NOTE: This listing was constructed to contain as many seed-propagated commercially available and experimental turfgrasses as possible. Also, in this issue, a few vegetatively-propagated cultivars are included. However, this document is not all inclusive and includes only major suppliers of turfgrass seed or plant material. Therefore, it is likely that some turfgrasses exist in the U.S. marketplace that are not found in the following pages.

In the following pages of this listing, "COMML" represents commercially available now and "AVAL9798" represents commercially available in 1997 or 1998.
